Himyarites
The Himyarites were the people of Himyar, the name given to a famous ancient kingdom located in modern-day Yemen.
The Himyarite Kingdom was established around 110 BCE.
It quickly became a large Empire, controlling important parts of the Arabian Peninsula (especially after the Himyarites conquered the Sabaean Kingdom around 280 CE).
However, the Himyarite Empire was disestablished in 525 CE, after being invaded by the Kingdom of Aksum (which is located in modern-day Eritrea and Ethiopia).
The Himyarite capital was Zafar until the Fourth Century CE:
after that, the capital of Himyar moved to Sana’a, which is also the capital of modern-day Yemen.
THE RISE OF THE HIMYARITE EMPIRE
At the beginning, Himyar was similar in size its neighbors the kingdoms of Saba and of Hadramaout.
During the early days of the Himyarite Kingdom, the region was mainly under the domination of the Qataban Kingdom, which ruled most parts of Yemen between 500 BCE and 110 BCE.
