The question has often been asked as to whether Satan and Lucifer are both one and the same person?
Although there is no actual verse that states Satan to be Lucifer, nor that a third of the angels followed him in his rebellion against God, when reasoning from Scripture, it leads us to those conclusions.
Both Jesus in Luke 10:18, and John in Revelation 9:1 allude to Isaiah 14:12, connecting the fall of the one mentioned there with the fall of Satan.
And he [Jesus] said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Luke 10:18
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! Isaiah 14:12
This verse has caused much controversy over the years, because the word ‘Lucifer’ is not in the original Hebrew text.
The Hebrew word is helel (or heylel), from the root, hâlâl, meaning to shine or ‘bear light.’
The similarity between hâlâl and the Arabic ‘hilal’, meaning crescent moon, is quite striking.
And in a Sovereign God kind of way, it’s no coincidence that the root word hâlâl is an anagram of allah.
Rather than translate helel directly from the Hebrew, the KJB translators adopted Lucifer as a proper name.
Lucifer is actually a Latin word, an adjective which appears in the Vulgate, or Latin translation of the Bible.
Quomodo cecidisti de cælo Lucifera, qui mane oriebaris? Isaiah 14:12
As an adjective, lucifer means ‘light-bringing’ or ‘light-bearer’ and whilst used as an epithet of Venus, it was often applied to the moon.
Diana for example, the Roman goddess of the moon, was also known as Diana Lucifera.
The Greek equivalent to Lucifer is eosphorus, and appears as such in the Greek text.
Therefore, in the English version of the Septuagint (Greek Old Testament) eosphorus has been correctly translated as Lucifer.
Yet although the three major versions, the Septuagint, the Vulgate, and the Authorized King James Bible are all in agreement, virtually all of the modern versions have since removed the name Lucifer altogether and now read
‘How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of dawn!’
Or something very similar.
Why?
Because:
- Witches
- Warlocks
- Lucifer worshippers
just can’t have people knowing that their god is none other than Satan.
Not only have modern translations concealed the fact that Lucifer and Satan are one and the same person, but once again have caused a degree of confusion.
Because elsewhere in Scripture the term ‘morning star’ is used exclusively of the one who is the ‘Light of the World’, Jesus Christ.
I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches.
I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. Revelation 22:16
He once came from heaven voluntarily, whilst Lucifer had once fallen.
And yet most modern versions of the Bible use the term ‘Morning star’ or ‘Day star’ for both Jesus and Satan.
Wilderness
From the time of his creation until he became overtaken by pride and self-love, Lucifer the Anointed Cherub is described as perfect in both his appearance (beauty) and in his ways.
Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. Ezekiel 28:12
Thou [Lucifer] art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so:
thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Ezekiel 28:14
Thou [Lucifer] wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. Ezekiel 28:15
At the time, Ezekiel was prophesying against the human king of Tyrus but simultaneously addressed the ancient malevolent spirit person operating in the background.
For no human being (king or otherwise) has ever walked amongst the stones of fire.
Such a privilege is reserved for mighty angelic beings.
How long Lucifer remained in this state of perfection is unknown, but it certainly didn’t last, and due to his pride and rebellion against God, he eventually lost his privilege and authority and was cast out as being profane from the mountain of God.
Taken from Ezekiel 28:13-16.
Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so:
thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
Thou [wast] perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
By the multitude of thy merchandise, they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore, I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God:
and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
Isaiah once prophesied against the human king of Babylon, yet at the same time he also addressed the ancient malevolent spirit person operating from behind the scenes.
Human kings don’t fall from heaven, but angelic beings do.
Taken from Isaiah 14:12-17.
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, [and] consider thee, [saying, Is] this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; [That] made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; [that] opened not the house of his prisoners?
As far as we know from the Bible, Lucifer was the first created being to pit his own will against the will of the Creator.
A closer look at Lucifer’s statements of willful intent, all suggest ascending heavenward in the literal sense.
Which would make the earth his starting point, and in all likelihood, the earth was the location of Lucifer’s throne in the previous world, and the original kingdom of heaven.
We know that Lucifer once had a throne, and most likely would have been amongst those present, and joyful when witnessing God laying down the foundations of the earth.
Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Job 38:6-7
Yet he became the one responsible for making the world (that then was) a wilderness, and the destruction of the cities.
I have no idea what
”the house of his prisoners”
not being opened refers to, but it certainly suggests injustice, and some form of slavery.
Whatever was going on at the time, it resulted in a water judgement of such intensity, that
‘the world that then was’
perished, and the earth became
”without form and void”
and submerged beneath the frozen surface of the great deep.
This had to have occurred during the gap between the first two verses of Genesis.
For there is nowhere else in the Scriptures, where an event of such a catastrophic nature could possibly have taken place.
Furthermore, when Lucifer (light-bearer) appeared as the serpent in the garden of Eden, as Satan (the adversary,) he was already a fallen being.
Whatever may have taken place, it’s made clear that the actions of Lucifer were the result of a willful abuse of the authority which he’d been given.
It would seem that once that choice had been made, it could never be retracted and would determine his ultimate destiny (the lake of fire) as well as that of the angels who chose to follow him.
Note that whilst we’re told the everlasting fire is ‘prepared’, there’s no indication that it has yet been ignited.
Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: Matthew 25:41
