Abstract

On September 4–6, 2026, a discussion on 4chan’s paranormal board, /x/, began with a deceptively simple complaint:

nobody seems able to explain thoroughly why the world is the way it is, what human beings are supposed to be doing here, or what religious words such as “God,” “faith,” and “wisdom” actually mean.

From that starting point the thread expanded into arguments about:

• intuition
• out-of-body experiences
• René Guénon’s Reign of Quantity
• solar activity
• earthquakes
• unusual animal behavior
• “sky trumpets”
• frost-cracking trees
• quantum mechanics
• the Everett interpretation
• remote spiritual influence
• reincarnation
• Gnosticism
• the Demiurge
• Archons
• 3I/ATLAS
• September 11 conspiracy claims
• Irish mythology
• Donald Trump’s health
• nanotechnology
• hidden knowledge
• “energy”
• the mysterious online figure called “Nobody”

and finally Scripture itself.

This paper does not begin by assuming that everything paranormal is impossible, nor does it assume that every conventional explanation must be correct.

Its central argument is narrower: the thread repeatedly moves from an observation, coincidence, intuition, subjective experience, or genuine anomaly to a highly specific hidden-cause explanation without establishing the evidentiary steps connecting the two.

That recurring structure can be summarized as:

Observation → Interpretation → Hidden Cause → Certainty

when the stronger investigative structure would be:

Observation → Verification → Operational Definition → Competing Explanations → Causal Hypothesis → Risky Prediction → Independent Test → Replication or Corroboration

The paper consequently distinguishes five questions that are too often blended together:

What happened?

How do we know it happened?

What caused it?

What does it mean?

What, if anything, does Scripture say about it?

• History
• psychology
• physical science
• philosophy
• biblical theology

are therefore kept distinct.

A scientific explanation of frost cracking does not disprove divine providence.

A Bible verse does not establish that a particular unexplained sound was supernatural.

A mystical experience may be psychologically significant without proving the experiencer’s metaphysical interpretation.

A genuine historical quotation does not authenticate an unrelated prediction.

And the inability to explain something does not establish whichever extraordinary explanation happens to be offered first.

From a biblical standpoint, this approach is not hostile to spiritual claims.

Scripture itself repeatedly demands discernment.

The controlling principle of this study is therefore Paul’s instruction:

“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:21

I. THE QUESTION THAT STARTED EVERYTHING

The opening post, No. 42915617, says in substance that nobody can provide a thorough explanation for why reality is the way it is, that no worldview clearly tells us how we ought to live, and that spiritual terms often function as undefined buzzwords.

The poster wonders whether perhaps nobody really knows the truth.

There are actually several different questions hidden inside that complaint.

The first is metaphysical:

Why does anything exist, and why does reality possess the structure it does?

The second is epistemological:

How can human beings know what is true?

The third is ethical:

How ought we live?

The fourth is religious:

Is there a God, and has God revealed anything about Himself?

The fifth is existential:

What makes a human life meaningful?

Those questions overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

An explanation of how earthquakes occur does not answer why existence exists.

A worldview can provide an ethical system without proving that its metaphysics are true.

A religious tradition can define “God” very precisely without thereby proving that God exists.

And widespread disagreement does not logically establish that there is no truth.

The opening claim that “no worldview” offers guidance is therefore too strong.

• Christianity
• Judaism
• Islam
• Daoism
• Buddhism
• Stoicism
• secular humanism

and numerous other traditions plainly offer accounts of human life and prescriptions for conduct.

The important question is not whether answers exist.

The important question is which answers are true and how we should evaluate them.

Yet the OP’s criticism contains something worth preserving.

Words such as “God,” “energy,” “truth,” “spiritual,” “consciousness,” “frequency,” “faith,” and “wisdom” can become empty containers if speakers never define them.

A careful investigation should therefore begin exactly where the OP begins:

What do you mean?

And then immediately ask:

How do you know?

II. OUR THESIS AND RULES OF EVIDENCE

The thesis of this paper is not:

Strange things never happen.

Nor is it:

The supernatural does not exist.

Nor:

Institutional explanations must always be trusted.

Nor even:

Every poster in the thread is wrong.

The thesis is:

The dominant epistemological failure in the thread is the repeated leap from observations or experiences to specific hidden causal narratives without sufficient evidence establishing the connection.

This matters because the same methodological error can appear in religious, atheistic, conspiratorial and skeptical forms.

The believer can say:

I cannot explain this, therefore God directly caused it in the particular way I imagine.

The occultist can say:

I experienced something extraordinary, therefore my cosmology is established.

The conspiracist can say:

Something in the official explanation seems incomplete, therefore my preferred hidden actor did it.

The materialist can say:

Neuroscience correlates with an experience, therefore metaphysical materialism has been proved.

The skeptic can say:

That person made an unsupported claim, therefore I am justified in inventing a psychological explanation for why they made it.

None of these inferences is automatically valid.

Rules of evidence

Different claims require different kinds of evidence.

Empirical claims

Claims about:

• earthquakes
• solar storms
• biology
• medicine
• astronomical objects

or remotely measurable effects should be operationalized.

What exactly was observed? By whom?

With which instrument?

Compared with what baseline?

Can another observer reproduce it?

Historical claims

Claims about 9/11, Irish independence, Gnosticism or old folklore should be evaluated through:

• documentary provenance
• contemporary records
• source criticism
• corroboration

Psychological claims

Psychological research can identify tendencies across groups and experimental populations. It cannot justify diagnosing an anonymous poster from several paragraphs of text.

Biblical claims

Claims that something is “biblical” must be tested by the text in context and compared with related passages.

Quoting a verse is not the same as demonstrating that the verse teaches the proposed doctrine.

Metaphysical claims

Statements concerning the ultimate nature of:

• consciousness
• purpose
• divinity

or reality require philosophical argument.

Scientific vocabulary does not automatically transform metaphysics into physics.

Subjective experiences

An experience is evidence that the person reports having an experience.

It does not automatically establish what caused the experience or what exists outside the experiencer.

Predictions

A prediction becomes evidentially valuable when its terms are established beforehand:

what will occur, where, when, within what tolerance, and what result will count as failure.

III. SOURCE HIERARCHY

For this investigation, sources are weighted roughly as follows:

This is a heuristic, not an infallibility chart.

Governments can be wrong.

Scholars disagree.

Journals retract papers.

Eyewitnesses can sometimes notice what institutions miss.

But skepticism toward authority does not eliminate the need for evidence.

Replacing

“the government says so”

with

“an anonymous poster says otherwise”

does not solve the epistemological problem.

It merely changes authorities.

IV. STEELMANNING THE THREAD

Before criticizing the thread, we should state its strongest case.

Human knowledge genuinely is incomplete.

Scientific paradigms have changed before.

Institutions sometimes make serious errors and sometimes conceal wrongdoing.

Subjective experience can reveal important information about human consciousness even when its ultimate interpretation remains disputed.

Anomalous observations should not be dismissed merely because they are inconvenient.

Comparative religion can reveal striking similarities among human attempts to understand existence.

Conventional explanations can become dogmatic.

And ridicule is not evidence.

These are legitimate cautions.

The thread is also correct when one poster observes that listing unusual events answers what appears to be happening, not necessarily why it is happening.

The strongest defensible position emerging from /x/ is therefore something like:

Reality may contain phenomena that present models do not completely explain.

Human institutions and worldviews are fallible.

We should remain willing to investigate unconventional evidence rather than rejecting it merely because it is strange.

That proposition is reasonable.

But notice what it does not establish.

It does not establish the Demiurge.

It does not establish “Nobody.”

It does not establish remote magical influence.

It does not establish reincarnation.

It does not establish interdimensional armies.

It does not establish that 3I/ATLAS is connected with arriving ships.

It does not establish that Israel planned September 11.

It does not establish that Donald Trump is terminally ill.

It does not establish that quantum mechanics means every imaginable reality exists.

And it does not establish that intuition is an infallible detector of truth.

Intellectual openness should increase investigation, not lower the evidentiary threshold.

V. THE THREAD: A GUIDED CHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS

1. “Nobody knows anything”

The OP’s opening statement is philosophically provocative but logically overbroad.

One cannot infer from disagreement that no answer exists.

A better formulation would be:

I have not yet encountered an explanation that I find sufficiently comprehensive and justified.

That statement is modest and defensible.

“There is no explanation”

is much harder to establish.

Biblically, Scripture certainly claims that human understanding is limited.

Ecclesiastes repeatedly confronts apparent futility, mortality and the difficulty of comprehending God’s work.

Yet its conclusion is not that nothing can be known. It ends with human responsibility before God.

This is important because Christianity does not answer existential uncertainty by pretending that every mystery disappears.

It makes definite claims while simultaneously acknowledging creaturely limitation.

2. “You ignored my evidence” and “do the work”

The first replies accuse the OP of ignoring evidence or demand that he independently discover the truth. Neither actually presents the supposedly decisive evidence.

This is burden shifting.

If I claim to possess evidence for proposition X, the burden is not met by saying:

Research it yourself.

Research may indeed require effort.

But that does not transform withheld evidence into demonstrated evidence.

This becomes increasingly important later when another poster asks why valuable evidence should be provided “for free.”

Secret evidence may exist.

But evidence that cannot be examined cannot function as public verification.

3. “The Nobody” and the power of Logos

Post 42915656 introduces “the nobody,” allegedly a living person with unusual spiritual powers and “the power of the logos,” although the poster cautiously adds “supposedly.”

The term Logos deserves special care.

In the Gospel of John, the Logos is not introduced as an occult ability.

John begins:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

The chapter continues by saying that all things were made by Him and that:

“the Word was made flesh.”

Within John’s own literary context, therefore, the Logos is personal, divine, creative and incarnate in Jesus Christ.

An anonymous contemporary spiritual adept possessing “Logos power” is not a conclusion derivable from John’s use of the term.

Borrowing biblical vocabulary does not establish biblical continuity.

We will return to this in the section Christ and the Logos.

4. Death, limitless consciousness and out-of-body experiences

Another participant expresses dissatisfaction with embodied existence and hopes that after death consciousness will become unlimited creative essence.

A later reply appeals to reports that out-of-body experiences are superior to the limitations of the physical body.

There are two separate questions.

First:

Do people genuinely report out-of-body experiences?

Yes.

Second:

Does the experience prove that consciousness literally detached from the body?

Not by itself.

Neurological reviews by Olaf Blanke and colleagues associate OBE phenomenology with disrupted multisensory integration and altered self-location around the temporoparietal junction.

This research provides a plausible neural account of how experiences of disembodiment can occur. It does not philosophically prove materialism, and it does not prove that no soul exists.

But it does mean that subjective disembodiment alone cannot establish literal separation of consciousness from the brain.

Scripture itself gives an instructive example of epistemic restraint.

Paul describes an extraordinary experience and writes:

“whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell:

God knoweth”

Whatever one concludes theologically about Paul’s experience, his language is striking.

He does not invent certainty where he does not have it.

“God knoweth.”

That is a valuable standard for the entire thread.

VI. “THE TRUTH CAN ONLY BE FELT”

Post 42915828 advises extensive reading and internal argument until one intuitively recognizes the correct path, concluding that truth can only be felt.

There is something valuable here.

Intuition is not worthless.

Experienced:

• physicians
• firefighters
• chess players
• pilots
• other specialists

can develop rapid pattern recognition.

But intuition is not an infallible faculty.

Kahneman and Klein’s influential work on intuitive expertise argues that reliable intuition depends especially on environments containing sufficiently regular cues and opportunities for prolonged learning and feedback.

Subjective confidence itself does not reliably certify expertise.

That makes

“it feels true”

epistemically inadequate when competing metaphysical systems produce equally powerful subjective certainty.

A Christian may feel Christianity is true.

A Gnostic may feel Gnosticism is true.

A Daoist may experience Daoist teaching as true.

A materialist may experience supernatural claims as obviously absurd.

The feelings cannot all adjudicate mutually incompatible propositions.

Biblically, inward conviction is important, but Scripture does not make private feeling the supreme court of truth.

Claims and spirits are tested. Teaching is compared against revelation.

Christian discernment is therefore different from:

My intuition authenticated itself.

VII. GUÉNON AND “THE REIGN OF QUANTITY”

A poster answers the OP by saying society is in

“the Reign of Quantity.”

This appears to reference René Guénon’s Le règne de la quantité et les signes des temps, published in 1945.

Guénon’s work criticizes modern civilization for privileging quantitative and material considerations over traditional qualitative and metaphysical principles.

Knowing that background makes the post more intelligible.

But it still does not answer the OP.

Saying:

Guénon’s framework interprets modernity as the triumph of quantity

is intellectually meaningful.

Saying:

therefore Guénon’s framework explains why reality itself exists as it does

is much larger.

A later poster in the thread recognizes exactly this problem and points out that naming

“the Reign of Quantity”

is not the comprehensive explanation requested by the OP.

This illustrates a common error:

Naming a pattern is not explaining its cause.

VIII. THE FIVE “ANOMALIES”

Post 42916281 is especially useful because it provides several concrete claims:

1. worsening solar conditions,
2. increased seismic activity,
3. worldwide “sky trumpets,”
4. unusual animal behavior,
5. “exploding trees.”

The poster then interprets the failure to recognize these events as evidence that people are somehow “under a spell.”

This is where disciplined investigation becomes possible.

Solar activity

There genuinely has been heightened solar activity.

NASA and NOAA announced in October 2024 that the Sun had reached the solar-maximum phase of Solar Cycle 25.

But solar maximum is part of the Sun’s approximately eleven-year activity cycle.

Greater solar activity is therefore real; the phrase

“incremental bad solar weather”

is too vague to establish that something unprecedented or supernatural is occurring.

Verdict: Partly supported observation; unsupported hidden-cause inference.

Earthquakes

The claim

“increased seismic activity”

requires a magnitude threshold, time window, region and baseline.

The U.S. Geological Survey states that temporary increases and decreases in global earthquake rates occur normally.

It also notes that modern catalogs contain more earthquakes partly because more seismic instruments can detect them.

The National Earthquake Information Center currently locates roughly 20,000 earthquakes per year globally.

This does not mean unusual regional seismic episodes never occur.

It means that

“there have been more earthquakes lately”

is not yet a rigorous measurement.

Verdict: Too vague as stated.

Animal behavior

Unusual animal behavior before earthquakes has been reported for centuries.

The interesting part is that USGS does not simply declare every story imaginary.

It notes many anecdotal reports while emphasizing that a reliable, reproducible precursor pattern and mechanism have not been established.

Animals can also perceive the smaller P-wave shortly before humans feel stronger shaking.

So both extremes should be resisted.

“Animals never act strangely before earthquakes”

is too strong.

“Strange animal behavior proves a coming supernatural event”

is also unsupported.

Verdict: Phenomenon worth investigating; thread claim not operationalized.

“Sky trumpets”

The thread supplies no named:

• observatory
• original synchronized recordings
• measurement protocol
• spectrographic analysis
• independent locations

or defined phenomenon.

Therefore there is insufficient material in the thread to establish either:

these sounds are supernatural,

or the skeptic’s later claim that:

all such recordings simply reused the exact same fake audio.

The responsible verdict is:

Unsubstantiated as presented.

Not supernatural.

Not necessarily fabricated.

Simply not established.

“Exploding trees”

Here the thread contains a real phenomenon wrapped in sensational language.

Illinois Extension addressed “exploding trees” directly in January 2026, explaining that the dramatic phrase exaggerates frost cracking:

• rapid winter temperature fluctuations can create expansion
• contraction and stress that produce vertical cracking
• sometimes loud reports

Another Illinois Extension treatment notes expansion of water and other cold-related tissue stresses as contributing factors.

So the later skeptic is directionally right that cold can explain the phenomenon but oversimplifies the mechanism by reducing it to “water expands when frozen.”

Verdict: Real natural phenomenon; sensational terminology; no evidence of paranormal causation.

And that gives us an important principle:

An apparently strange fact does not become less real because its interpretation was exaggerated.

Debunking should correct the explanation without denying genuine observations.

IX. THE MISSING BRIDGE

The five anomalies expose the central structure of the thread.

Suppose all five were real.

Solar activity increased.

Earthquakes increased.

Unidentified atmospheric sounds occurred.

Animals behaved unusually.

Trees cracked loudly.

Even granting all five, the following still does not automatically follow:

Therefore they share one cause.

And even that conclusion would not establish:

Therefore the common cause is supernatural.

And that would not establish:

Therefore the supernatural cause is the Nobody, the Demiurge, Archons, a timeline shift or approaching ships.

Each arrow requires new evidence.

A rigorous Hidden Causation Ladder looks like this:

The thread repeatedly climbs from the first rung to the last without building the ladder between them.

X. “I WAS MOSES”

One poster announces that he was Moses and links a video.

No independent evidence accompanies the identity claim.

A linked video might contain evidence, argument, performance, humor or personal narrative, but the bare statement itself cannot establish reincarnation.

Biblically, Moses is treated as a particular historical covenant figure. Scripture does not present reincarnation as the ordinary explanation for later people claiming previous biblical identities.

The appropriate classification is therefore:

Extraordinary autobiographical/metaphysical claim — unsupported by evidence supplied in the thread.

That is not the same as proving the poster insincere.

On an anonymous board, sincerity itself may be unknowable.

XI. THE COLD, DEAD WORLD

Post 42916432 argues that if there is no prescribed way to live, reality becomes a cold dead world populated by minds trapped in isolation.

This is existentially powerful.

It is not logically decisive.

An idea does not become false because it would make life bleak.

Nor does another become true because it provides comfort.

This is an appeal to consequences unless independent reasons are supplied.

The biblical worldview responds differently.

It does not infer God from the emotional undesirability of meaninglessness.

It asserts a Creator-creature relationship, objective moral accountability and human purpose.

Whether those assertions are true is a separate apologetic question.

But the biblical account is certainly not the “cold dead world” described in the post.

XII. “CHRISTIANITY IS JUST TAOISM”

Post 42916448 recommends comparing religions through intuition and says Christianity is essentially Daoism furnished with parables, metaphors and governing rules.

There are interesting comparative points.

Both traditions can speak about a “way.”

Both contain critiques of pride.

Both can emphasize humility and the limits of ordinary human striving.

But similarity is not identity.

Daoism is itself a diverse Chinese philosophical and religious family organized around concepts of dào, natural pathways and different accounts of human alignment with reality. Modern scholarship warns against reducing that diversity to a simple Western category.

Biblical Christianity meanwhile makes very specific historical and theological claims:

God creates the world.

Israel enters covenant with God.

Jesus is the incarnate Son.

Christ dies and rises.

Sin requires reconciliation.

History moves toward judgment and resurrection.

Those claims are not simply Daoist metaphors with additional rules.

Comparative religion can illuminate similarities.

It cannot erase contradictions by declaring all traditions equivalent.

XIII. “NINE PLANETS” AND SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS

A poster argues that humanity has learned major facts only recently and uses the example that science established nine planets only

“a bit more than a century ago.”

The general point—that science develops over time—is reasonable.

The example is historically inaccurate.

Pluto was discovered in 1930 and was long classified as the ninth planet.

The International Astronomical Union reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet in 2006.

As of September 2026, Pluto’s discovery was about 96 years ago, not more than a century ago.

There is also a conceptual issue.

Science did not

“prove that the Solar System has nine planets”

and then discover that the proof was false.

Astronomers discovered an object and subsequently revised the category “planet” as additional Kuiper Belt objects altered the classification problem.

That is a useful illustration of science correcting terminology and taxonomy.

It is not evidence that every unconventional cosmology is consequently plausible.

XIV. THE “YOUR BRAIN CANNOT UNDERSTAND” DEFENSE

Post 42917479 claims an explanation exists but that the listener would require an imaginary higher level of processing power to understand it.

This move is epistemically dangerous because it can protect any claim.

If the listener understands, the theory wins.

If the listener does not understand, the failure proves the listener is cognitively inferior.

A claim structured this way becomes insulated from criticism.

This is closely related to special pleading and self-sealing epistemology.

There are legitimate subjects requiring advanced expertise.

A layman may genuinely be unable to evaluate an advanced proof in algebraic geometry.

But experts can still show the intermediate mathematics, publish arguments, receive criticism and enable other specialists to reproduce the reasoning.

“Too advanced for you”

is not itself evidence.

XV. TEGMARK, BELL AND EVERETT

Post 42918572 invokes Max Tegmark, Bell-type experiments, time dilation and Everett’s many-worlds interpretation, then concludes that everything capable of existing does exist.

This compresses several difficult issues into one unsupported chain.

Bell’s theorem constrains classes of local hidden-variable explanations under specified assumptions.

Contemporary discussions include Everettian approaches, Bohmian mechanics, superdeterminism, retrocausal approaches and other interpretive questions.

Bell’s theorem does not simply read:

Everett is the only remaining possibility.

Tegmark himself wrote that several major nonrelativistic interpretations produce the same practical “cookbook” predictions for ordinary experiments, helping explain why experiment alone does not straightforwardly settle the interpretational question.

Even if Everett were correct, another leap remains.

“Every quantum outcome represented within a specified physical theory occurs”

is not synonymous with:

Everything anybody can imagine exists somewhere.

Logical contradictions do not become real because someone can write them down.

Nor does quantum branching establish every mythology, fictional character or arbitrary metaphysical proposition.

This is a classic example of semantic expansion:

A technical scientific proposition gradually becomes a universal metaphysical license.

XVI. REMOTE WELLNESS AND CAUSALITY

Post 42918591 associates a timestamp with an alleged remote injection of wellness or serenity.

If such an effect exists, it is experimentally approachable.

That is good news.

One would need:

a predetermined intervention time,

subjects who do not know whether an intervention is occurring,

a placebo or sham condition,

predefined outcomes,

randomization,

appropriate statistics,

and replication by independent investigators.

Without these, a participant feeling better afterward cannot distinguish among:

remote influence,

expectancy,

ordinary mood variation,

coincidence,

selective reporting,

or regression toward the mean.

This does not prove remote influence impossible.

It identifies what would begin to demonstrate it.

That distinction—impossible versus unproven—should be maintained throughout paranormal research.

One poster says life’s purpose is serving God and growing.

Another says human beings are simply animals or biomass and are therefore not special.

A later poster argues that human teeth, muscles and intelligence suggest that domination and coercive aggression are the natural way to live.

These represent different mistakes.

The first is a theological assertion needing definition and support.

The second moves from biological classification to moral worth.

The third moves from biological capacity to moral obligation.

That third move is an is/ought fallacy.

Human beings possess capacities for aggression.

They also possess capacities for:

• cooperation
• self-sacrifice
• caregiving
• language
• restraint
• moral reflection

Nature describing what organisms can do does not tell us what they ought to do.

Biblically, human dignity is explicitly grounded elsewhere:

“So God created man in his own image…”

Genesis also describes the created order as

“very good.”

Within biblical theology, moral obligation is therefore not inferred from whatever behavior biological strength makes possible.

Its center is Jesus Christ.

That does not mean every question has been answered.

It means Christianity’s answer should be judged according to what Christianity actually claims—not according to vague spiritual language borrowed from it.

Believe the paranormal.

nor:

Mock the paranormal.

It is:

Define the claim.

Find the source.

Separate observation from interpretation.

Separate correlation from causation.

Compare competing explanations.

Preserve predictions before outcomes.

Do not use science vocabulary as magic.

Do not use Scripture as decoration.

Do not call uncertainty knowledge.
